PRIDE!

June 1, 2020 @ 8:00 am - June 30, 2020 @ 5:00 pm

Happy Pride Month!

All of June is dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and the history of fighting persecution, injustice, and inequality.

What started PRIDE?  In 1969, the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan was targeted by a police raid, which quickly went out of hand and for the next several days, protests occurred daily.

A female patron was hit with a baton, leaingd to a brawl between patrons, police, and bystanders. the Tactical Patrol Force of the NYPD was then called, leading to further fighting and many injured. A year later, the first recorded Gay Pride Parades in New York, Chicago, and LA were held and by 1971, parades expanded to other major cities in the U.S. and Europe. The riots had led to the birth of the Gay Liberation Movement and within two years, every major city had a gay rights group and began organizing PRIDE events to commemorate the Stonewall Riots.

This eventually blossomed into the PRIDE celebration we know today, and serves to honor the memory of that fateful night and the movement for justice it inspired. PRIDE is a month-long celebration and is focused on highlighting the diversity of individuals, their identities, and the advancement of civil rights for the community at large.

Join us in our celebration of PRIDE! Even though we can’t participate in any parades due to COVID-19, we can all still acknowledge the history and courage it took and still takes to this day for all those involved!
